Description:
This is the
application of the technology of using stored antimatter to propel a
spacecraft. Antimatter rocketry is powerful enough to allow
subluminal interstellar spacecraft, and easily powerful enough to
launch things into orbit of any planetary body, even a gas giant or a
medium density star. This technology and ramscoop fusion rocketry
are the two most powerful subluminal propulsion methods, and ramscoop
fusion might not be possible.
An antimatter propelled spacecraft gets its
propulsion from the annihilation of matter with antimatter, possibly
adding in extra matter to increase the exhaust momentum (since momentum
is mass times velocity, and photons don't weigh much). As such,
there is a substantial ionizing radiation hazard to those in the
exhaust direction of one of these rockets (and thus, modest weapons
potential of the rocket itself, aside from Antimatter Weapons
[[linkey]]). Antimatter interstellar drive-equipped craft can
achieve any sub-light-speed velocity that their fuel supply allows them
to achieve and Armor[[linkey]] or Shielding[[linkey]] allow the
occupants to survive. Since these craft react antimatter with
matter, they rely on antimatter as fuel and (generally) cannot
manufacture it. The exception to this is Ramscoop/Antimatter
hybrid craft.
This is a difficult task, and early models will have
a relatively high probability of disaster.
