Description:
Fission power is the process of producing heat from the decay of heavy radioactive elements, and using that heat to power a heat engine type device to produce usable power (e.g. electricity).  This is the first power production infrastructure that can produce a really vast power supply.  It is dependent on the availability of fissionable materials, which must be mined.  (Yes, I know that plutonium fuels can be produced in a breeder reactor, but they are produced from the non-radioactive Uranium 238, which itself is a byproduct of radioactives mining.)
