Description:
Mathematics is the field of describing things in a concrete and quantifiable manner.  If you don't know what mathematics is, why are you even reading this document?  Development of the mathematics subfield consists mostly of discovering new techniques to describe more situations or to solve new problems.  There should be some sort of feedback mechanism, as discovering new phenomena that have not been described mathematically tends to prod the field on to come up with new ways of describing such things.  (Although new stuff will be thought up anyway, this just makes the new stuff tend to be more useful.)
Hand computation is the idea of doing mathematically intensive procedures by hand.  Obviously this is inferior to almost any form of computer, but computers will not always be immediately available.
