    This is the idea of storing samples of every available organism within an ecosystem.  It allows the Gene Bank project, which further allows the Planetery Genome Project.  If lots of organisms within your ecosystem are becoming extinct due to industrial development or war damage, this could be a vital project lest you lose too much of your ecosystem's genetic material.  (As it can become supremely valuable stuff later on, in the genetic engineering phase).
